Have Fun Watching The Whales

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

There are several different types of whales. They were valued for their meat and oil and hunting decimated a lot of the population. When whales became endangered most countries banned any whaling. There are many organizations that are trying to help the mammal’s survival and stop all types of hunting.

The main types of species include toothed and baleen whales. Toothed species have teeth and hunt and eat squid and fish as food. Baleen species, which are the largest species of whales, filter water through their baleen and catch plankton. This Baleen acts like a sieve. Toothed species are also the ones that use echolocation in the ocean.

They are not fish but they are mammals as they breath air, produce and feed their young milk and are warm blooded. They are able to survive in the cold water because of the layer of blubber that is under their skin.

Whales are thought of as predators though they don’t eat humans or very large animals. They really only eat krill or plankton. They also do not drink seawater though they do get water from metabolizing food and their blubber.

Many people may think of these creatures as predators but they are not dangerous to humans or large mammals. Most only eat krill and plankton. They get the water that they need through their food as well as metabolizing their fat, they do not drink seawater. They also do not completely fall asleep. Only sections of their brain sleep at a time so that they do not drown.

Many of the larger whales are extinct and smaller species are being threatened as they are being killed by the nets used by fisheries. Populations are slowly recovering after all of the hunting that occurred in the 20th century.
